What is the IB Diploma Programme?

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepares students, aged 16-19, for success at university and life beyond. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. Since its development in 1968, the program has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.

The Diploma Programme prepares students for effective participation in a rapidly evolving and increasingly global society as they:
  • develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
  • acquire breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, studying courses from six subject groups
  • develop the skills and a positive attitude towards learning that will prepare them for higher education
  • study another language and increase understanding of cultures, including their own
  • make connections across traditional academic disciplines and explore the nature of knowledge through the programme's unique theory of knowledge course
  • undertake in-depth research into an area of interest through the lens of one or more academic disciplines in the extended essay
  • enhance their personal and interpersonal development through creativity, activity, and service

History

Established in 1968, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme was the first program offered by the IB and is taught to students aged 16-19. As of September 2019, there were 3,421 schools offering the DP in 157 different countries worldwide. The DP was established to provide students with a balanced education, facilitate geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding. It was created by teachers at the International School of Geneva, with assistance from several other international schools. Since then, innovative and committed teachers and examiners from around the world have played a significant role in the development of the program.

Kaiser High School implemented the Diploma Programme in 2010. The first Kaiser DP cohort graduated in 2012. The Kaiser High School community has been, and continues to be, very proud of our DP  students' tremendous accomplishments throughout the program and for years thereafter.
